The Washington Wizards plan to keep Wes Unseld Jr. as their head coach entering next season.
“He is our coach moving forward,” Tommy Sheppard told the media in Washington (via Josh Robbins of The Athletic).
Unseld was hired to be Washington’s head coach back in 2021., taking over for Scott Brooks. Sixers assistant coach Sam Cassell was among the candidates that were in the running for the position at the time, though the Wizards ultimately went with Unseld, who was coming off an impressive run as an assistant with the Nuggets.
Unseld Jr. took over a team that made the playoffs during the summer of 2021 and he hasn’t been able to bring the Wizards back to the NBA’s second season. Washington has undergone significant roster changes since hiring Unseld, beginning with the Russell Westbrook trade in 2021 and later, trading for Kristaps Porzingis. The team has also dealt with various Bradley Beal injuries, as we recently discussed in an assessment of Tommy Sheppard’s tenure leading the front office.
