Wizards: Spencer Dinwiddie Focused on Being Best Possible Team Player

The ball is in Bradley Beal‘s hands most of the time for the Wizards. There’s no secret about that.

That’s why Spencer Dinwiddie makes it a point to be the table-setter out there at the point guard position, so that Beal can get into a rhythm early and also allow guys like Kyle Kuzma and Montrezl Harrell to get involved into the flow of the offense.

“I feel like I can get a shot at any time,” Dinwiddie said. “That’s not a question. It’s also just about the psychology of our team. This is a more complicated game than just like who shoots when and all that other stuff. If I come out there and let’s say me and Brad both shoot 20 times a game, 40 shots in a game, and we only shoot 85 as a team. That’s only [45] more in that game. Now, is [Kyle Kuzma] mad, is [Kentavious Caldwell-Pope] mad?

There’s just not that many [shots] left. Somebody’s gonna have to fall on the sword a little bit and understand that for everybody to get their 10, it means that he can’t have 20. It’s not gonna be Brad, so I’m the next option.”

With Beal being out of the lineup the past two games, Dinwiddie stepped up big time in the scoring department, as he put up 27 and 23 points in victories against the Pelicans and Magic.

Because of his ability to get going at any time, Dinwiddie leads the Wizards in fourth-quarter scoring with 5.5 points a game. That’s when he becomes more aggressive and attacks the rim off the pick-and-roll.

Dinwiddie also has the presence of mind to provide help in the rebounding department, particularly when he’s guarding an off-ball shooter. He views that as a golden opportunity to crash the boards given his great positioning.

Dinwiddie is easily the Wizards’ most versatile player with his ability to score, pass and defend. He’s a huge reason why the Wizards are currently the best team in the Eastern Conference.
