LeBron James will be eligible for an extension with the Lakers late this summer and if LBJ opts not to ink a new deal, he could play out the season and enter the 2023 free agency class.
While some speculate that such a scenario would foreshadow the team trading him this summer, the Lakers wouldn’t see his desire to play out his deal as a reason to trade him, according to a report by The Athletic.
Reports earlier this year indicated that James would be open to a return to Cleveland. However, without a trade, that couldn’t occur until 2023 at the earliest.
James is scheduled to make $47.1 million during the 2022-23 season.
