The Lakers are having a busy weekend. On Friday, they brought back Dennis Schroder to add more point guard depth to their backcourt. While the team should be deeper than last season’s squad, they are not done rounding out the roster.
Lakers Audition Isaiah Thomas, Several Other Free Agents
Los Angeles has worked out several veterans. Isaiah Thomas, Shabazz Muhammad, Sharife Cooper, Mychal Mulder, Armoni Brooks, Mychal Mulder, Jeremy Lamb, Dwayne Bacon, and Miye Oni have all worked out for the Lakers, according to HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto.
Thomas previously played with LeBron James on two occasions. IT had a stint with LBJ in Cleveland during the 2017-18 season and he suited up with the Lakers for four games last season.
Muhammad and Lamb are interesting names, as each could provide depth on the wing for Los Angeles. Muhammad, who was the No. 14 pick out of UCLA in the 2013 draft, last played in the NBA for Milwaukee during the 2017-18 season and while during the majority of his career, he’s showcased an allergy toward passing the ball, he did record 2.2 assists per 36 minutes during his 11 games with the Bucks then (up from his 1.1 career mark).
Lamb’s injuries have kept him down but he managed to play in 17 games for the Kings last season where he scored 7.9 points per game. He made 30.2 percent of his three-pointers, which was down from his 34.2 percent career mark.
Does Schroder Signing Indicate Future Lakers Trade?
Reports that the Lakers could bring Russell Westbrook off the bench have surfaced since Schroder’s deal was announced and that, along with the Patrick Beverley signing, could mean that Westbrook may not be that big of the team’s plans for the upcoming season.
Westbrook remains likely to stay on the Lakers’ roster, however. Coach Darvin Ham has publicly spoken about being set with the team’s starting lineup, though he has the support of the organization to make changes if needed.
There were some rumblings about a Westbrook trade as part of a Donovan Mitchell multi-team deal. According to The Athletic, Los Angeles was in trade discussions with the Hornets, Knicks, and Jazz and as part of the deal would have acquired Bojan Bogdanovic and Terry Rozier.
