A league source told Amico Hoops on Friday that Cavaliers center Tristan Thompson is drawing interest in free agency, and apparently, the Minnesota Timberwolves are among those taking a look.
Per veteran Minneapolis sportscaster Darren Wolfson of 5 Eyewitness News, the Timberwolves have inquired about signing Thompson, an unrestricted free agent.
Thompson, 29, has also been linked to the Los Angeles Clippers. He also was drawing interest from the Lakers, but their Friday deal with forward/center Montrezl Harrell likely eliminated Thompson from consideration.
A return to the Cavs is not out of the question. They certainly are interested in bringing him back.
The NBA free agency period started Friday, and when it comes to Thompson buzz, things have mostly been quiet. At least, they have been publicly.
Thompson averaged a career-high 12.0 points and 10.1 rebounds last season. Teams all around the league admire his relentless approach in rebounding. He is always willing to grab offensive rebounds, then hand the ball off to the team’s top scorers for an extra shot at the basket.
The Timberwolves’ frontcourt currently features center Karl-Anthony Towns, power forward Juan Hernangomez and reserve center Naz Reid. Based on that, Thompson would undoubtedly offer a boost.
