Dennis Schroder and Lauri Markkanen are the clear top two and with each remaining, it’s fair to wonder whether they severely misread the market. Schroder infamously turned down a four-year, $84 million contract extension with the Lakers last year, and Markkkanen left extension negotiations last year wanting more than Chicago was willing to offer (the Hornets and Pelicans are each reportedly considering a sign-and-trade for the RFA).
Both players could still find lucrative deals via sign-and-trades, though the list of teams with salary-cap flexibility is shrinking.
Beyond those top two, where each of the available free agents ranks likely differs from franchise to franchise. Looking for a veteran who can complete your frontcourt rotation? Paul Millsap might be your glue guy. Have a need for a scorer off the bench? Someone like Josh Hart might be of value, especially for a playoff contender without a fully-formed second unit. Want someone with some upside on the end of your roster? Still-young prospects like Isaac Bonga or Frank Ntilikina make sense to take a chance on.
It’ll be interesting to see where each of these 20 players land as free agency winds down.
