The Celtics Have Suspended Ime Udoka for the entire 2022-23 season, as ESPN reports.
The Celtics cited violations of team policies in their announcement. Sources previously told ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski that Udoka had an intimate relationship with a female member of the franchise’s staff.
The team also stated that a decision about Udoka’s future beyond the year will be made at a later date.
Joe Mazzulla will be the interim head coach for the Celtics this season.
"To think that guys on the team or coaches or anybody else in the organization can just walk back on the court and everything [is fine] is not the way it is."
Brad Stevens on the impact of Ime Udoka's suspension on the team
Udoka won’t be on the bench for the Celtics this season and his future in Boston isn’t guaranteed. ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski indicates that rival NBA teams may have interest in hiring Udoka should the Celtics officially relieve him of his duties.
“It was kind of a shock,” Markkanen told Eric Walden of the Salt Lake Tribune. “I didn’t hear anything before, I didn’t see my name in any rumors…It was emotional. I understand the business side of it, so I’ve got no hard feelings. I thanked them for the opportunity that I had. But the first moments were really emotional for me, because we really liked Cleveland, and thought we’d found a home there.”
