When asked if the Boston Celtics are good enough to win a championship as currently constructed, team president Danny Ainge was brutally honest.
“I do not,” Ainge said on 98.5 The Sports Hub when asked if he thought the Celtics were title material.
He continued.
“Our roster obviously is not good. I mean, we are a 14-14 team. There’s no if’s, and’s or but’s about it. That’s who we are,” Ainge said. “This team, where we are, 14-14, if there’s somebody to blame, this is Danny Ainge to blame. This is not Brad Stevens. It’s not Jayson Tatum or Jaylen Brown. It’s like not good enough right now. And we all know that. And, you know, we need to get better.”
Despite the rocky early season, the Celtics are still in fifth place in the Eastern Conference and just a half-game back of the Indiana Pacers for the fourth spot.
They have also missed several players to injury/illness already. The list includes Tatum, Kemba Walker and Marcus Smart, currently out with a calf strain.
The Celtics have been linked to available Cleveland Cavaliers center Andre Drummond, though Ainge wasn’t asked about a potential trade for Drummond, and it’s not likely he would have answered anyway
