As expected, the Wild Thing is back with the Cavaliers, as Anderson Varejao has signed a 10-day contract with the franchise that for a long time served as his NBA home.
The move allows Varejao, 38, the opportunity to retire as a member of the team after helping it reach the Finals in 2007 and 2015, providing hustle and enthusiasm next to LeBron James.
He last played in the NBA in 2017 with the Warriors, and is returning to bring some buzz to an injury-riddled team that is again headed for the lottery.
“Andy embodies all that the city of Cleveland stands for and beyond, and we couldn’t be more excited to bring his experience, leadership and character back into this locker room,” general manager Koby Altman said. “His infectious work ethic and commitment to our community have earned him his rightful place in the fabric of this organization and all of Northeast Ohio, and have established a genuine admiration that resonates strongly throughout our passionate fan base.
“There are not many athletes who can impact the game of basketball the way Andy has over his career, and I feel that our players will benefit greatly from their daily interaction with him.”
Varejao appeared in 591 games with the Cavs before a trade sent him to the Trail Blazers in 2016. He was soon released by Portland and signed with Golden State — competing against the Cavs in the 2016 and 2017 Finals. The Cavs won the championship in 2016.
