Update: This move is official, with the Spurs announcing the move in a team statement on Monday. Dieng will wear No. 7 and the roster now stands at a full 17 players.
The Spurs are adding center Gorgui Dieng, beating out several teams for his services, Marc Stein of the New York Times reports. The Knicks, Suns, Clippers, Sixers, Raptors, Heat, and Nets were all in touch with the big man’s representatives for his services.
The Grizzlies waived Dieng after searching for a trade leading up to the trade deadline. The 31-year-old was making $17.3 million, which limited the trade market for his services.
Dieng is expected to be the backup center, filling the role that LaMarcus Aldridge was demoted to earlier in the year with Jacob Poeltl becoming the starting five. Aldridge inked a deal with the Nets over the weekend.
To accommodate the signing, San Antonio is waiving Marquese Chriss, who remains out for the season with a broken right fibula. The Warriors traded Chriss to the Spurs at the deadline in order to save cap space.
