The Sixers and Joel Embiid have agreed to a four-year, $196 million extension, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic.
Embiid’s new super-max deal will keep him under contract through the 2026-27 season. He has two seasons left on his contract before coming to the agreement with the franchise.
Here is a year-by-year breakdown of the deal:
2021-22: $31.6 million
2022-23: $33.6 million
2023-24: $43.7 million*
2024-25: $47.23 million
2025-26: $50.72 million
2026-27: $54.22 million
*The first year of Embiid’s extension, assuming the salary cap projection of $124.9 million for the 2023-24 campaign (as ESPN’s Bobby Marks explains).
Embiid became eligible for the super-max deal by earning a spot on the All-NBA Second Team this past season.
No Injury Language in Embiid’s New Deal
Embiid’s first major deal with the Sixers —the five-year, $147 million contract which he signed in October of 2017—contained several injury clauses.
The big man had appeared in just 31 games over his first three seasons in the league at the time of the deal and the Sixers included language which would allow them to waive Embiid without penalty if he missed over 25 games or played fewer than 1,650 minutes because of injury. The new contract contains no such language, per ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne.
Over the past few seasons, Embiid has avoided missing significant time with injury and when he did get hurt, he was able to make a quick return, like when he missed just 11 games with the bone bruise in his knee this past season.
Embiid suffered a torn meniscus in his right knee during the playoffs and powered through. He’s not expected to require surgery for the ailment, Shelburne adds.
Embiid has led the Sixers to the playoffs in each of the past four seasons, posting career averages of 24.8 points and 11.3 rebounds per game. He finished second in the NBA MVP race this past season.
