Chris Paul has an opportunity to become a free agent this summer, having a player option on his contract for next season worth $44.2 million. Yet, Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.com can’t envision the point guard leaving for another team.
The Knicks have been linked to CP3, though Woj notes that Paul entertaining New York may only be a “leverage point” for his negotiations with the Suns.
Paul had options during the offseason in regards to his trade from Oklahoma City (with Philadelphia apparently being one of them), though he chose Phoenix because he wanted to be there and through a season in Arizona, the 36-year-old’s stance remains the same.
The two sides are eligible to work on an extension this summer or Paul could simply opt out of his deal and ink another one with the Suns.

- The Pistons aren’t expected to make major moves this summer, as GM Troy Weaver explains (via Keith Langlois of Pistons.com). “I don’t anticipate having too many roster spots available,” Weaver said. “We like our group and we’re excited about the guys under contract and even our own free agents. I don’t anticipate much turnover at all.”
- Weaver added that while the Pistons are a young team, he doesn’t envision jettisoning the more experienced players on the roster or avoiding vets in free agency. “Our roster construction is always going to have veterans,” Weaver explained.
- Prior to the trade deadline, Detroit traded for Hamidou Diallo and the plan is to retain the wing. “It’s a young group that he fits and we need his talents,” Weaver said of Diallo. “If he can continue to buy into Coach Casey’s system, which he did … I think he can have a very bright future here in Detroit.”
- Lonzo Ball is a restricted free agent this summer and teammate Zion Williamson wants to see him return. “I really would want ‘Zo to come back,” Williamson said (via ESPN). “He knows that. But you know, like I said, the reality of the situation is ‘Zo is a grown man, so he’ll make the decision that’s best for him. The only thing I can say is I hope he stays.” Ball recently expressed a desire to stay in New Orleans.
- The ultimate goal of the Pelicans’ front office is finding the right players to put around Zion Williamson, Bobby Marks of ESPN.com relays.
- ICYMI: The Cavaliers may make substantial changes in the front office this summer, including bringing in someone above GM Koby Altman.
