The Memphis Grizzlies have waived center Gorgui Dieng after failing to move him prior to the trade deadline. The Grizzlies announced the decision in a press release.
Dieng, 31, is owed about $16.6 million this season. He is averaging 7.9 points and 4.5 rebounds in 22 appearances.
Grizzlies executive VP of basketball operations Zach Kleiman was asked about Dieng’s status earlier Friday, and responded that there will be “more to come” on that, per Chris Herrington of the Daily Memphian.
Dieng is expected to draw interest as a reserve big man for multiple playoff contenders should the Grizzlies decide to part ways.
“Selected with the 21st overall pick in the 2013 NBA Draft, the 31-year-old has competed in 537 regular season games (205 starts) over his eight-year NBA career and has averaged 7.9 points, 6.1 rebounds and 1.4 assists in 21.8 minutes,” the release read. “A native of Senegal, Dieng won the 2013 NCAA Championship as a junior at the University of Louisville.”
