Cleveland Cavaliers coach J.B. Bickerstaff may be in need of an assistant coach (well, two) before the 2020-21 season tips off, as relayed by Chris Fedor of Cleveland.com.
That’s because there’s a belief within the organization that Cavs assistant Dan Geriot could leave to join old friend Tyronn Lue with the Los Angeles Clippers, Fedor noted.
Lue spent last season as the lead assistant under Doc Rivers, who was let go after the Clippers’ disappointing second-round playoff exit. Rivers moved on the Philadelphia 76ers and Lue moved into the main chair.
Lue is already expected to add former Cavs assistant and head coach Larry Drew to the Clippers staff, as well as former NBA guard Chauncey Billups.
Geriot joined Lue and the Cavs prior to the title-winning 2015-16 season as a seasonal video coordinator. He was then promoted to assistant video coordinator/coaching assistant, then again to assistant coach under John Beilein prior to the start of last season.
Prior to joining the Cavs, he served as an assistant coach at Campbell University (2013-15).
A former standout at Richmond, Geriot has spent most of his time in Cleveland working with the frontcourt players.
As Fedor relayed, the Cavs already have one assistant opening, created when Bickerstaff replaced Beilein as head coach.
