While there was a ton of chatter about LeBron James returning to the Cavaliers at some point in the future, longtime NBA journalist Marc Stein gets the impression that the franchise does not want another LBJ stint in Cleveland.
This franchise, this organization, this ownership, this front office, they’ve had to hear for a zillion years, you’ve never done anything without LeBron.
Stein hedged a bit with his report, indicating that things could change if James makes it clear that Cleveland is where he wants to be.
“Let’s just say he played out the last year of his Laker deal and said, ‘I only want to sign with the Cleveland Cavaliers.’ It would take serious, serious, serious stones from [Cavaliers owner] Dan Gilbert and [Cavs general manager] Koby Altman to say no, we are turning away the only guy who has delivered a championship in this city’s modern sports history.”
More From Cleveland
- Oddsmakers at PointsBet have the team favored to make the playoffs and they give Cleveland odds of +425 to win the Central Division (currently 2.5 games behind Chicago).
- New GM Mike Gansey doesn’t believe the Cavs should have done more to add point guard depth at the trade deadline despite the team’s current injury concerns. “I don’t think we regret (not adding another) because I didn’t think we would see doomsday with our point guard situation,” Gansey said (via Chris Fedor of Cleveland.com). “Brandon Goodwin has been awesome for us. A great find. He’s keeping us afloat right now. Gotta give him credit for that.”
- Amadou Sow of King James Gospel wonders if Caris LeVert should continue to come off the bench for the Cavaliers. The former Pacer has come off the pine in three of four games since arriving in Cleveland at the trade deadline, though he hasn’t played since the All-Star break due to a foot sprain.
