Nets point guard Kyrie Irving has been fined $50,000 for violating the NBA’s COVID-19 health and safety guidelines, the league announced, but it will actually cost him a lot more.
Along with the fine, Irving had to undergo a five-day quarantine period and forfeit his salary for the games missed during that time. As relayed by Shams Charania of The Athletic, Irving will not be paid for the Nets’ games Tuesday and Wednesday.
Irving is making just more than $33.4 million this season, and given that a player is fined 1/81.6th of his salary for missing games for violating COVID-19 guidelines (via ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski), Irving’s actual fine will be closer to $870,000.

The fine resulted from Irving attending a private party last weekend. It was believed to be a family birthday, and video surfaced earlier in the week showing Irving not wearing a mask in a fairly large gathering.
Irving had been away from the Nets for unspecified reasons prior to the violation, and the Nets have since acquired fellow star guard James Harden in a trade. But it should all be coming to an end soon, Wojnarowski reported, as Irving is expected to return and join Harden and Kevin Durant for the Nets’ game Saturday.
All of this, of course, is contingent on Irving receiving positive test results after quarantine.
