Nike recently suspended its deal with Kyrie Irving and earlier today, founder Phil Knight said that he doesn’t envision Irving having a future with the company.
“He stepped over the line,” Knight said to CNBC. “It’s kind of that simple. He made some statements that we just can’t abide by.”
Irving posted an antisemitic link on his social media and followed that up by defending his actions to reporters. The Nets suspended the point guard for five games. Nike, according to Knight, gave Kyrie the chance to clarify comments, though Irving “dug in” to his stance.
According to ESPN, Irving’s deal with Nike was believed to be valued at $11 million. While Irving’s deal is currently on suspension, Knight indicated that the relationship is likely over.
“I would doubt that we go back,” Knight explained.
Many in the NBA community and media (including Charles Barkley) have spoken out about their issue with Irving’s stance.
