The Wizards and Scott Brooks recently parted ways, leaving the organization to search for its new head coach for the first time in five years. Tommy Sheppard will conduct a lengthy and thorough search to decide who the next coach will be in Washington, according to Jake Fischer of Bleacher Report.
Sixers assistant coach Sam Cassell, a native of the area, has emerged as a leading candidate, sources told our own Chris Crouse. Cassell coached Bradley Beal during the shooting guard’s first two seasons in the league and the two remain close.
Wes Unseld Jr., another native of the area, has also emerged as a top contender. Unseld, whose father had a Hall-of-Fame career with the franchise, began his coaching career as an assistant with Washington back in 2005, remaining with the franchise for six years. He’s currently an assistant on the Nuggets’ staff.
Washington has also received permission to interview Mavericks assistant coach Jamahl Mosley, according to Marc Stein of The New York Times. Mosley was considered a candidate to replace Rick Carlisle before the Mavs ultimately hired Jason Kidd to take over as their head coach.
Latest Draft Buzz
The Wizards don’t currently have a second-round pick in this year’s draft, but they could still look to add one via trade, according to Chase Hughes of NBC Sports Washington.
The Wizards recently interviewed Isaiah Todd and Daishen Nix of the G-League Ignite, as both guys could be available in the second round and can be productive players in the right environment.
Washington also owns the 15th pick in this year’s draft, as they spoke to Jalen Johnson of Duke and Ziaire Williams of Stanford, both of whom can be available at that spot.
