The Wizards got out to an impressive start to the season, though they have dropped eight out of their last 10 games.
Coach Wes Unseld Jr. has seemingly said the same thing after each of the losses: the team needs to put it together for the entire 48 minutes.
“The competitive spirit isn’t always there,” Unseld told FortyEightMinutes and other media via zoom this week. “Bottom line, do we have pride collectively and individually to say ‘we are going to play this way?'”
Washington added several new players in the offseason and altered the roles of several returning members. Second-year forward Deni Avdija hinted that the team just needs more time together on the court, telling reporters that the Wizards need to “trust each other more.”
Whatever the solution, the Wizards aren’t in that bad of a position. If you would have told the team that they would be .500 after 30 games heading into the season, that might be a win given all the change that accompanied the team this offseason. Still, Washington needs to do something to get back on track.
More Wizards Notes
- Thomas Bryant isn’t expected back until after the calendar turns to 2022, coach Wes Unseld Jr. told FortyEightMinutes and other media via zoom. December was original a target timeline for Bryant, who is working his way back from a torn ACL.
- Bradley Beal recently spoke with Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports, explaining that while he’s loyal to the Wizards, he’s not rushing to sign an extension. “I got time, so I kinda hold the cards right now. And one, I’ve never been in this position. I’m kinda embracing that, being able to kinda dictate how I want my future to be and where I want it to be,” Beal said on “Posted Up.” “And at the same time, I’m not gonna make that grand commitment and it doesn’t work. Ultimately, you have to be selfish at some point and for probably the first time in my career, Year 10, I am. And so I’m kinda taking advantage of it in a way.
