WASHINGTON D.C. — Davis Bertans‘ season is likely over as an MRI on Tuesday revealed that he has a significant strained calf injury.
The diagnosis will sideline him for four-to-six weeks and with that timeline, the Wizards would need to essentially make the NBA Finals to assure that Bertans would play again this postseason.
Bertans exited the Wizards’ Game 4 win with the ailment. Without the power forward on the floor, coach Scott Brooks tried out some additional looks, including a four-guard lineup that saw Ish Smith and Raul Neto share the floor with Bradley Beal and Russell Westbrook.
Has Bertans played his last game in Washington?
Bertans inked a five-year, $80 million contract to return to the Wizards this past offseason after having a great 2019-20 campaign with the franchise. However, this season has been up-and-down for the 28-year-old forward and there has been some pondering as to whether he’s the best fit with the franchise long-term.
If the Wizards are going to make a major move this season, like adding a third star to the core of Westbrook, Beal, and Rui Hachimura, then Bertans’ salary will likely need to be included for salary-matching purposes.
Yet, sources tell FortyEightMinutes that the front office remains committed to Bertans despite the rough season and will not simply include him in trades as a salary-filler. While Bertans’ three-point shooting slipped below 40 percent for the first time since his sophomore season in the league, there remains optimism within the Wizards that Bertans will return to form next year.
