Free agent point guard Ty Lawson has agreed to a contract with Greek club Kolossos, as relayed by Stefan Djordjevic of Eurohoops.net.
Lawson is 5-foot-11 and played in the NBA from 2009-18 with the Nuggets, Rockets, Pacers, Kings and Wizards. His best season was 2013-14, when he averaged 17.6 points and 8.8 assists for Denver.
Lawson, 32, was banned from the Chinese Basketball Association in September after posting a picture of himself with a woman in an Instagram story and making what the CBA considered racist comments. Lawson later responded by saying he “meant no disrespect.”
While the woman’s face was not revealed, Lawson indicated elsewhere in the story that she was Chinese, writing that “Chinese women got cakes on the low.”
Lawson explained those remarks on social media.
“I’m probably the least racist guy you’ve ever met in your life, like I have fun with anybody,” he said. “‘Cakes’ means that she had a nice body. That’s it, you’re taking it too far. I meant no disrespect, and all the racism and disrespect coming towards me is wild. …
“Anybody who knows me in China knows I’m not that person, at all. I was literally saying that she had a nice body, and I danced at a club.”
Lawson was later released by the Sturgeons and dropped by his agent. But it appears a new opportunity is closing in with Kolossos.
“An important factor was the fact that coach Ilias Kantzouris has a personal relationship with the (Lawson), as he worked with him in Kaunas during the 2011 lockout when he was an assistant on the Zalgiris bench,” Djordjevic wrote.
