Former NBA point guard and Hofstra alum Speedy Claxton has taken the reigns as head coach at his alma mater. Claxton had been serving as an assistant.
Claxton, 42, played for the Pride during the late 1990s, was was selected by the Philadelphia 76ers in the first round of the 2000 draft. Along with the 76ers, he spent time with the San Antonio Spurs, Golden State Warriors, New Orleans Hornets and Atlanta Hawks, before retiring in 2009.
Claxton replaces Joe Mihalich, who missed last season after taking a medical leave of absence. Mihalich has since moved into an advisory role at the school. Claxton has served as an assistant at Hofstra for the past seven seasons.
