The Nets have begun discussing contract extensions with James Harden and Kyrie Irving, GM Sean Marks told the media (h/t Malika Andrews of ESPN.com).
Marks said he is “confident” that Brooklyn’s three stars will be under contract long-term by the time training camp starts.
Brooklyn recently inked Kevin Durant to a four-year, $198 million extension.
Examining Brooklyn’s Offseason Moves
Getting Durant to sign an extension was an obvious win for the Nets, though they had other (albeit smaller) victories, such as the signing of Patty Mills.
Mills has the ability to lead the second unit, though as Zach Lowe of ESPN.com notes, the former Spur may never have to carry that burden on his own. With the Nets’ big-3, the team will again use Harden to run the second unit, giving the franchise an advantage over every team in the league. Still, Mills provides insurance in that area in the event of an injury to one of the stars and the need for coach Steve Nash to re-configure the rotation.
Retaining Bruce Brown was another win for the franchise, though with him accepting his qualifying offer (which will allow the wing to hit the unrestricted free-agent market next offseason), it’s also likely a win for Brown as well.
