Notable NBA Roster Cuts: Rockets, Wolves among biggest surprises

Chris Crouse by Chris Crouse

Reading Time: 6 mins read

Saturday is a big day for cuts as it allows teams to trim down their rosters to 15 players ahead of the NBA season. We’re tracking all the cuts on this busy day. Be sure to check back later, as this piece will be updated!

Chicago Bulls

  • Zach Norvell
  • Simi Shittu

Neither cut was a real surprise, as both players were training camp invites and neither had a guaranteed salary in their contracts.

Cleveland Cavaliers

  • Matt Mooney
  • Charles Matthews
  • Levi Randolph

Randolph spent each of the past two seasons in the G League with the Charge, as our own Sam Amico writes. He was their leading scorer with 16.9 points per game. Mooney has also seen time with Cleveland’s G League affiliate, as he was on a two-way contract with the franchise last season.

Dallas Mavericks

  • Courtney Lee

Lee inked a training camp deal in early December but his release doesn’t really come as a shock. The shooting guard, who came to the Mavs in the Kristaps Porzingis trade, never played a consistent role for the franchise.

Key Points: Tyler Herro Scores 30, Leads Heat Past Hawks and Punch Their Ticket to the NBA Playoffs

Houston Rockets

  • Gerald Green
  • Trey Mourning
  • William McDowell-White

Green, who spent most of the last three seasons with Houston, is a somewhat surprising cut. Coming off a season where he sidelined because of a broken foot, he signed a non-guaranteed deal with the franchise prior to camp starting.

Indiana Pacers

  • Naz Mitrou-Long
  • Josh Gray
  • Devin Robinson

New York Knicks

  • Michael Kidd-Gilchrist
  • Bryce Brown
  • Myles Powell

MKG departs from the Knicks’ crowded frontcourt and it wouldn’t be surprising to see the vet latch on with another team at some point this season. Initially, however, he may have to sit at home.

Miami Heat

  • B.J. Johnson

The Heat’s roster is set and Johnson missed out on a two-way contract opportunity with Max Strus getting Miami’s second spot.

Milwaukee Bucks

  • Treveon Graham
  • Nik Stauskas

Stauskas, who has played for the Kings, Sixers, Nets, Blazers, and Cavaliers, spent last season in Spain and he was hoping to write another chapter of his NBA career in Milwaukee, though the club can’t carry a 15th man right now because of hard cap restrictions.

Minnesota Timberwolves

  • Rondae Hollis-Jefferson
  • Tyler Cook
  • Zylan Cheatham
  • Charlie Brown Jr.

The Wolves will waive RHJ and it’s certainly a surprising move given the forward’s past experience.

This is a flexibility play for the Wolves. Allows them to keep an open roster spot in case a 2 for 1 or 3 for 2 trade materializes, or they suffer a big injury. There is a possibility that they bring back RHJ later as well, sources said. https://t.co/w7PMhWVW28

Wolves know that they NEED to get better defensively. They're going to challenge the players from within to pick up the slack. No question though that they will miss RHJ's intensity.

New Orleans Pelicans

  • Rawle Alkins
  • Tony Carr
  • Jarrod Uthoff
  • Ike Anigbogu.

Anigbogu, the No. 47 overall pick in the 2017 draft, had a chance to secure a roster spot, though the 6’10” big man is likely headed back to the G League where he has seen time in each of the past three seasons.

Philadelphia 76ers

  • Justin Anderson
  • Frank Mason

As we passed along earlier today, the Sixers opted to keep center Vincent Poirier over Anderson, who previously played for the franchise.

Utah Jazz

  • Yogi Ferrell
  • Malcolm Miller

Sacramento Kings

  • Frank Kaminsky

The former No. 9 overall pick signed a one-year deal with the Kings this offseason and he’ll look for another team as Sacramento waives the big man.

The Sacramento Kings are releasing F/C Frank Kaminsky, sources tell @TheAthleticNBA @Stadium.
