The Houston Rockets are hiring Dallas Mavericks assistant Stephen Silas as coach, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.
Silas emerged from a reported group of three finalists that also consisted of Rockets player development coach John Lucas and ESPN analyst Jeff Van Gundy.
Silas has been an NBA assistant coach since 2000. Along with the Mavericks, he has worked for the Charlotte Hornets, Golden State Warriors and Cleveland Cavaliers. He also served as a scout for the Washington Wizards during the 2005-06 season.
Silas is the son of former NBA big man and longtime coach Paul Silas.
The Rockets, featuring the star backcourt of James Harden and Russell Westbrook, also have a new GM in Rafael Stone.
“The Rockets were sold on Silas’ offensive ingenuity, his pedigree with (Mavericks coach) Rick Carlisle, (Orlando Magic coach) Steve Clifford and his father, Paul Silas,” Wojnarowski reported. “Silas has coached some remarkable guards in his NBA career, including Luka Doncic, Kemba Walker, Steph Curry. Now he gets to run offense for Harden-Westbrook.”
