UPDATE, 2:59 p.m. EST: Chris Clemons is out for the season after an MRI revealed a torn Achilles, per Shams Charania of The Athletic. Details below.
Rockets guard Chris Clemons left Tuesday’s preseason loss to the Spurs in a wheelchair and the prognosis doesn’t seem good.
Per Shams Charania of The Athletic, Clemons suffered what is believed to be a torn right Achilles tendon.
Clemons is 5-foot-9 and entering his second season after leading the NCAA in scoring as a senior at Campbell in 2019. He averaged 4.9 points in 33 appearances last season.
As Bobby Marks of ESPN noted, Clemons was expected to see increased minutes this season as a backup to newcomer John Wall. The Rockets could also struggle to sign someone in free agency to fill in, given their cap situation.
“(Clemons is) on a $1.5 million non-guaranteed contract but Houston would be on the hook this season if this is a long term injury,” Marks wrote. “The Rockets right now are $1 million under the hard cap.”
