Steve Kerr is out as coach of the USA Basketball men’s team after winning an Olympic gold medal in Paris, according to NBA reporter Marc Stein.
Erik Spoelstra and Ty Lue have emerged as favorites to become the next coach of the program. Both were assistants under Kerr.
Kerr, a four-time champion with the Golden State Warriors, joined Team USA after the 2016 Olympics, serving as an assistant under Gregg Popovich. Popovich then handed the reigns to his former pupil after taking home a gold medal during the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.
Kerr ended up inheriting a roster featuring LeBron James, Stephen Curry, and Kevin Durant, as they finished 6-0 in Paris, including a big comeback win over Serbia in the semifinal round, thanks in large part to Curry’s clutch 3-pointers.
Kerr joined Popovich, Rudy Tomjanovich, Lenny Wilkens, and Chuck Daly as the only coaches to win both a gold medal and NBA championship as a head coach.
