The NBA intends to drop the 50-game limit typically allowed for players on two-way contracts for this season, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic.
The reason, of course, being that teams have been short of available bodies as the world continues to battle the COVID-19 pandemic. Already, more than 30 games have been postponed because of teams not having the required eight players, as a result of injuries, COVID-19 test results or contact tracing.
Per Charania, teams will allowed to be able to keep and utilize players on two-way contracts for the playoffs, if necessary.
“Sources said there was massive support among NBA executives on a call today regarding this plan to expand two-way player rules,” Charania reported.
Despite the postponements, the NBA intends to hold an All-Star Game in Atlanta on Sunday. The league will be on break from March 5-10 before the second half of the schedule begins.
Two-way players generally spend most of their time in the G League or at the end of the bench in the NBA. But in a season such as this, have been called upon more regularly.
