Veteran center Andre Drummond is a free agent after agreeing to a contract buyout with the Cleveland Cavaliers, and if he doesn’t land with the Los Angeles Lakers, it won’t be because the Lakers didn’t try.
Per ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Drummond’s potential teammates have already put on a full-court press.
“They are really focused on Andre Drummond right now,” Wojnarowski said on SportsCenter. “I know the Lakers players have been trying to recruit him to LA.”
While Woj didn’t specify which Lakers, exactly, have been making pitches, LeBron James was known for trying to get big names come to Cleveland while with the Cavaliers.
Drummond, 27, reportedly has his list of potential destinations narrowed to five. Along with the Lakers, the list includes the LA Clippers, Boston Celtics, New York Knicks and Charlotte Hornets.
If Drummond were to join the Lakers, he would have to sign for the veteran’s minimum.
The Cavs opted to sit him while unsuccessfully seeking a trade, meaning the NBA’s reigning leading rebounder has not played in a game since Feb. 12.
Several opposing players contacted by FortyEightMinutes questioned the Cavs’ decision to stop playing Drummond while attempting to find a resolution.
