Kyrie Irving is looking to play for Australia in the 2028 Olympic games.
“We’re in the process of that right now,” Irving — who was born in Melbourne, Australia — recently explained to reporters.
“Just trying to figure out what’s going to be the best route for me to be eligible. There’s a lot of paperwork in between that.”
Irving helped USA Basketball win a gold medal during the 2016 Olympic games in Rio de Janeiro, though he hasn’t played for Team USA since. Irving would need approval from multiple parties, including USA Basketball, FIBA, and Basketball Australia to play for another country in a future Olympics.
“Obviously, Team USA still has a decision to make,” Irving said. “But for me, I’m just trying to do what’s best. Honestly, if I can be an Aussie at one point in my career and play for the Australian team, that would be great.”
Irving will be 33 years old at the end of the 2024-25 NBA season.
