The Sacramento Kings have announced the hiring of Alvin Gentry as associate head coach on Luke Walton‘s staff.
Gentry coached the New Orleans Pelicans from 2015 until August.
“I’m excited to add Alvin’s valuable experience and leadership to the team,” Walton said in a statement. “His veteran coaching perspective will be a great addition and I look forward to working with him again to continue developing our group.”
Gentry will serve as the Kings’ associate head coach. He was also being courted by the Philadelphia 76ers for an the same with new coach Doc Rivers, per Marc Stein of the New York Times, but Gentry opted for the Kings.
Walton and Gentry, of course, worked together as assistants with the Golden State Warriors under Steve Kerr.
Gentry was fired by the Pelicans in August after an uneven showing during the league’s restart on the Disney campus. The Pelicans failed to make the playoffs for the fourth time in Gentry’s five seasons with the franchise.
He has also served as head coach of the Phoenix Suns, Los Angeles Clippers and Detroit Pistons.
