At least two key members of the Heat’s front office have “substantial interest” in a trade for James Harden, according to Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald.
Meanwhile, Greg Sylvander of Five Reasons Sports reported that the Heat and Rockets have already taken part in conversations about the star guard.
Harden has made it clear he would like to be dealt — with the Nets, Heat, Bucks and 76ers reportedly high on his wish list of potential destinations. Per Jackson, the interest from the Heat is mutual.
It should also be noted that a report from Marc Stein of the New York Times indicated the Sixers are the early frontrunner if the Rockets decide to make a deal.
Harden, 31, averaged 34.3 points last season to lead the NBA in scoring for the third straight season.
While the Heat may have interest, a trade for Harden won’t be easy, given the size of his contract. It includes a player option for $47.4 million in 2022-23.
“If a trade with Miami ever materialized, the fact that Miami is over the cap means the Heat needs to send out salary not far below the $41.2 million that Harden is due this season,” Jackson wrote. “Miami, whose payroll stands at $124.4 million, can take back 125 percent of salaries it sends out, plus $100,000.”
