It’s been a fairly disappointing season for the Celtics. Rather than contend for an Eastern Conference title, they’ve been mired in the middle of the pack.
Some of it is injury-related. Some of it is just the Celtics never coming together as a team, even when completely healthy.
So while Celtics president Danny Ainge offered support for coach Brad Stevens, Ainge did indicate that changes are on the way.
“I think that we will definitely be looking to make some changes in the offseason,” Ainge told reporters. “Obviously can’t go into any of those kind of details. But yeah, there will be changes. How significant? I don’t know yet. We’ll see.”
There has been talk of perhaps looking into a trade involving either Jayson Tatum or Jaylen Brown, currently out for the season following wrist surgery. Or perhaps veteran guard Marcus Smart.
Of course, Ainge wouldn’t go that far.
“The bottom line is our team hasn’t been as consistent, hasn’t been as healthy,” Ainge said. “We definitely will need to make some changes. But I wouldn’t say there’s any needed changes of our best players.”
What will be the plan? Only Ainge and the rest of the front office can decide. One thing we do know is the Celtics don’t want to — nor play on — just staying the course.
