The Oklahoma City Thunder will interview Sydney Kings coach Will Weaver for their own coaching vacancy, according to Olgun Uluc of ESPN.
Sydney competes in Australia’s National Basketball League. The team revealed in a press release that Weaver is interviewing for an NBA job.
“Will has kept us informed in an ongoing basis in regards to the recent discussions he has been involved in,” Kings owner owner Paul Smith said. “We support Will in this process. It is implicit to our vision for the Sydney Kings, a club that helps ambitious people move forward in their careers. Be it a player, coach or a member of our management team, my greatest thrill is seeing people achieve their ambitions.”
Weaver, 36, is a native of Texas and is well-regarded around the NBA. He is a former assistant under Brett Brown with the Philadelphia 76ers and Kenny Atkinson with the Brooklyn Nets. Weaver also coached the G League’s Long Island Nets.
Weaver is currently quarantining in Oklahoma City to prepare for the interview, Uluc reported.
Thunder general manager Sam Presti has managed to keep the search relatively quiet as he seeks a replacement for Billy Donovan, now coach of the Chicago Bulls.
