Donovan Mitchell‘s arrival with the Cleveland Cavaliers caught many off-guard, including Mitchell himself, who had expected the Knicks to trade for him.
“Who doesn’t want to be home, next to their mom,” Mitchell told the media in Cleveland. “I haven’t lived at home since I was in the eighth grade and I went to boarding school, so it would have been nice.”
New York had been linked to the former Jazz star, having conversations with Utah for months leading up to his eventual trade. While the move to Cleveland wasn’t what Mitchell had been expecting, nevertheless, he was thrilled with the outcome. Mitchell confirmed to reporters in Cleveland that he heard the news of his trade while golfing in Miami.
“Once I found out I got traded and what we were going into, that trumped everything for me,” Mitchell explained. “I am truly excited to be here, to be a part of this group, to be a part of this city.”

- Mitchell’s arrival has some speculating that Caris LeVert could be on his way out of Cleveland. One interesting scenario would be three-team trade that sends LeVert to the Kings, as James Piercey of NBA Analysis contends. Cleveland would receive Josh Richardson from San Antonio while the Spurs would net Richaun Holmes, Alex Len, and a pair of second-round picks.
- Expectations are higher in Cleveland with oddsmakers setting the club’s win total at 42.5 this upcoming season (up from 28.5 last year). The Cavaliers are +1500 to win the Eastern Conference and +3250 to win the NBA title at fuboSportsbook (as of this writing).
