Former NBA point guard Baron Davis spent part of the 2010-11 season with the Cleveland Cavaliers, and Cavs owner Dan Gilbert intended to not let Davis leave if it meant signing on with LeBron James and the Miami Heat.
At least, that’s what Davis had to say about the situation.
“I remember Dan Gilbert sent a message to me he wouldn’t let me out my deal if I went to play with LEBRON!!! Facts,” Davis tweeted. “He knew that where I was going so they played hardball… he said if I went to play with LEBRON he would win a title. I told him LEBRON gonna win one anyway.”
Davis turned out to be right — but not that season.
James left Cleveland in free agency in 2010 to win a championship with Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh, but the first one didn’t come to 2012.
Meanwhile, Davis left the Cavs at the end of his lone season there, but never did end up with the Heat. Instead, he played his final year with the New York Knicks in 2011-12.
James won one title in Miami before returning to Cleveland in 2014. He led the Cavs to a championship of their own in 2016.
So why Davis felt the need to bring up his experience in Cleveland is anyone’s guess.
Today’s Cavs are 14-22 and three games out of the final playoff spot heading into the second half of the season. James, of course, is coming off another championship with the Los Angeles Lakers.
