West Notes: Dieng, Aldridge, Drummond, Horford, Oubre

Reading Time: 2 mins read

The San Antonio Spurs recently signed Gorgui Dieng to help replace LaMarcus Aldridge. Dieng had his fair share of suitors after being bought out by the Memphis Grizzlies.

“It was like college recruiting all over again,” Dieng said. “Everybody is going to talk to you and tell you why they want you to be on their team, and I felt comfortable with what I heard here…I like the team, I like the way they play.”

Dieng was specifically impressed by how the Spurs play basketball, and it’s hard not to be when the organization has been a regular in the playoffs for the last 20+ years.

“They have a good system,” Dieng said. “The ball doesn’t stop. It moves around. They play together and they have a Hall of Fame coach that knows how to run his team. I am pretty excited to see what they are all about.”

More West Notes

  • Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich wishes LaMarcus Aldridge all the best with the Brooklyn Nets, according to Tom Orsborn of San Antonio Express-News. Aldridge averaged 19.5 points and 8.0 rebounds per game in 5+ seasons with the Spurs and now comes to Brooklyn hoping to win his first championship.

  • Andre Drummond‘s contract with the Los Angeles Lakers is the amount he gave up in his buyout with the Cleveland Cavaliers, which is $794,536, according to Bobby Marks of ESPN. The Lakers have enough room to add a 15th player.

  • The Oklahoma City Thunder have decided to shut Al Horford down for the rest of the season to make way for young guys such as Moses Brown an opportunity to play meaningful minutes. The five-time All-Star will remain with the team for the rest of the season and will work with management to find a situation that better suits him at this stage of his career.

  • Golden State Warriors GM Bob Myers had no problem with Kelly Oubre‘s recent comments about wanting to start. “I like what (Oubre) said last night,” Myers said. “He should want to start.” Oubre, who is averaging 15.2 points per game, will be an unrestricted free agent this offseason.
