The Los Angeles Clippers have interviewed assistant Sam Cassell for their head coaching vacancy, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.
Cassell spent the previous six seasons working under Doc Rivers with the Clippers, and is now a candidate to replace with Rivers along with fellow assistant Tyronn Lue.
Cassell, 50, is also considered a candidate for the Houston Rockets’ vacancy. Before joining the Clippers, he was an assistant with the Washington Wizards (2009-14).
“Sam Cassell should be a head coach, period,” Rivers said recently, via ESPN’s Tim MacMahon. “He’s got an incredibly high basketball IQ, and I just hope he gets a shot. … When they talk about paying dues, he’s paid every due that is possible and he’s yet to get a job. So, I’m hoping that happens.”
Cassell played for eight different teams as point guard from 1993-2009.
