This is usually the time of year when the G-League is preparing for its annual draft but it’s hard to know if there will even be a season in 2020-21.
According to Marc Berman of the New York Post, among the scenarios being discussed would be to not hold a G League season at all and instead expand NBA rosters.
Another scenario would be to have the G-League teams play in multiple “bubbles” for a few weeks at a time in a format similar to the G League showcase.
“If a more normalized G-League season is attempted, sources said it would have to be with a regionalized schedule to reduce travel,” Berman wrote.
The G-League suspended the season March 12 and never resumed. Per Berman, player agents are hopeful there will indeed be a season in 2020-21, and if not, at least having players on two-way contracts receive a full minimum NBA deal, with rosters expanded from 15 to 17.
The new G-League select team of preps-to-pros prospects is expected to debut this season as well. The team is known as the Ignite and is based in Walnut Creek, Calif.
“The select club is expected to host a tournament in November or December facing random G-League players,” Berman reported. “Its existence is a motivator to stage a season, sources indicated.”
