Veteran guard Dion Waiters remains unsigned and apparently he may keep it that way.
In appearance on Instagram Live, Waiters admitted he is contemplating retirement because of the “politics” of the NBA.
“They think I’m playing. I’ve been contemplating it though — about retiring,” Waiters said. “It’s the politics for me. Game-wise, we know what’s up. I just can’t do the politics, man. We ain’t going over that water. I’ll retire before that.”
Waiters, 29, is a 6-foot-4 shooting guard who ended last season winning a championship as a member of the Lakers. He signed in February, and at first, the Lakers seemed excited about what he might offer.
But he quickly fell out of coach Frank Vogel‘s rotation. The Lakers opted not to re-sign Waiters after the season.
That said, it’s hard to believe Waiters will actually hang it up. He presumably still has a few good years in him, and in the right situation, he has shown he can still fill it up.
He is also represented by Rich Paul, a power broker of an agent who tends to find his clients jobs.
Waiters appeared in seven regular-season games last season, averaging 11.9 points. He has been on playoff teams just twice — last season and 2015-16 with the Heat.
