Former Cleveland Cavaliers coach John Lucas has emerged as a candidate for the Houston Rockets vacancy, according to Marc Stein of the New York Times.
Lucas, 66, has served as a player development coach with the Rockets since 2016, joining the franchise at the same time as former coach Mike D’Antoni.
Along with Lucas, Los Angeles Clippers assistants Tyronn Lue and Sam Cassell have also been mentioned as candidates for the Rockets job, as has former Rockets coach and current ESPN analyst Jeff Van Gundy.
Lucas previously served as head coach of the Cavs, Philadelphia 76ers and San Antonio Spurs, lasting less than two full seasons at each stop. He last worked as a head coach in the NBA in 2003 with the Cavs.
A point guard out of Maryland, he was drafted by the Rockets with the No. 1 overall pick in 1976. He has compiled an overall coaching record of 173-258.
The Cavs were just 8-34 when he was fired midway through the 2002-03 season.
