There had been a few doubts from those who follow the Cavaliers, but yes, veteran point guard Matthew Dellavedova will be back, league sources confirmed.
The news was broken by ESPN, which reported Dellavedova and the Cavs have agreed to a one-year deal.
Training camp is set to tip off Dec. 1, and the Cavs general manager Koby Altman has had a busy couple of days. Along with signing Dellavedova, Altman acquired JaVale McGee in a trade with the Lakers and reportedly signed shooting guard Damyean Dotson, who spent his first three NBA seasons with the New York Knicks.
Dellavedova, 30, is 6-foot-4 and has been a fan favorite since making the team as an undrafted rookie in 2013. His endless hustle and penchant for running the offense in reserve has also made him a favorite of the organization.
Along with power forward Kevin Love, Dellavedova is one of just two remaining Cavaliers from the 2016 championship team. A third, center Tristan Thompson, agreed to a deal with the Boston Celtics late last week.
Dellavedova didn’t put up great numbers as a backup to Darius Garland and Collin Sexton in the backcourt, though he did offer plenty in the areas of leadership and NBA know-how.
He also compiled averages of 6.8 points and a whopping 9.2 assists in the Cavs’ final five games before the suspension of the season.
It is believed Dellavedova’s deal is for the veteran’s minimum of about $2.1 million. He spent two seasons with the Milwaukee Bucks (2016-18) between stints with the Cavs.
