Some call December 15 ‘National Trade Machine Day.’ Others call it the unofficial beginning of trade season in the NBA.
Under the league’s collective bargaining agreement, free agents who sign new contracts can not be traded for three months or December 15, whichever is later (the rules were slightly adjusted because of the previous condensed season, though the same date applies for players who signed this summer).
The Wizards only have two players who fall under this category:
- Neto briefly hit free agency before re-signing on a one-year contract. Because he inked a one-year deal with his incumbent team, he has the ability to veto any trade this season.
- Dinwiddie came to the Wizards in the 5-team Russell Westbrook trade that also saw Kyle Kuzma, Kentavious Caldwell-Popo, Aaron Holiday and Isaiah Todd (via the No. 31 overall pick) arrive in Washington. Unlike the others, Dinwiddie’s deal was a sign-and-trade, which means he falls under this criteria while the rest of the players are already eligible to be dealt.
