Multiple teams are preparing sign-and-trade offers for Washington Wizards free agent forward Davis Bertans, according to Chase Hughes of NBC Sports Washington.
Bertans, 27, is coming off a career season in which he averaged 16.0 points on 42 percent shooting. He did not participate in the NBA restart in Orlando and his looming free agency was cited as a reason.
He just finished his first season in Washington after spending the first two years of his career with the San Antonio Spurs. The Wizards are likely to have the first (and perhaps best) shot at signing Bertans.
Most of the teams with interest in Bertans are those in contention, per Hughes. The Boston Celtics, Los Angeles Lakers and Denver Nuggets were among those that inquired about his availability before the trade deadline in February.
Several others have the cap space to sign Bertans and wouldn’t need a sign-and-trade arrangement to bring him in. The list includes the Atlanta Hawks, New York Knicks and Phoenix Suns. All appear to have an interest.
Of those three, the Hawks will be “particularly aggressive,” Hughes reported, given that they stand to have more room under the salary cap than any other team.
