The Detroit Pistons wouldn’t mind moving up in the draft and if they can, well-traveled point guard LaMelo Ball may be their man.
“I love the draft. I love it every year,’ Pistons general manager Troy Weaver told reporters. “I always look at the draft with a glass half full. Yeah, you may not have a Zion Williamson or a Ja [Morant], but there’s guys in the draft that we really like.”
The Pistons currently own the No. 7 overall pick. The Minnesota Timberwolves and Golden State Warriors own Nos. 1 and 2, respectively. Both are willing to trade down. So maybe the Pistons can find a deal.
“The draft is always great because you have a chance to bring these young men in your program and help shape your culture from Day One,” Weaver said. “So we really like the draft. Yeah, moving up is definitely an option as well, but I’m excited about the draft.”
Weaver went on to say that Pistons intend to interview Ball soon. Perhaps working in their favor is the fact that Ball’s manager is Jermaine Jackson Sr., a Detroit native who played for the Pistons during the 1999-2000 season.
“I know people around (Ball). His trainer is a Detroit native, so I’m sure he’s been here for a while working out,” Weaver said. “I’m sure he’s well-versed in the city from traveling around, being with his trainer and hearing different things. That doesn’t go unnoticed and that’s always a positive when prospects speak highly of the city and the organization.”
Ball is projected to be selected within the top three of the draft, scheduled for Nov. 18.
