The Hawks traded for Lou Williams at this year’s deadline and while the veteran guard was a solid contributor during his time in Atlanta, the team views the backup point guard spot as an area where the franchise can improve.
“It’s no secret that we’ve always struggled to field a consistent role is at the backup point guard spot,” Hawks team president Travis Schlenk said (via Sarah K. Spencer of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution). “We’ve had a couple of different guys. I think that’ll be one area where we look to shore up this offseason.”
Williams, who will be an unrestricted free agent this summer, would like to return to Atlanta and the team is open to bringing him back. Although, price and other roster additions will factor into whether the former Sixth Man of the Year award winner remains in town.

More NBA Rumors
- The Pelicans coaching search is narrowing. Phoenix assistant Willie Green and Milwaukee assistant Charles Lee are “prominent” candidates in the team’s coaching search, according to longtime NBA journalist Marc Stein. Lee is also in the running for the Wizards’ head coaching position.
- The Jazz reportedly determined to bring back Mike Conley, who is a free agent this offseason. According to Tony Jones of The Athletic, Utah intends to make “every attempt” to re-sign the veteran point guard. However, they won’t be alone in their pursuit as the Mavericks are among the rival teams with eyes for Conley.
- Jerian Grant recently agreed to join Olimpia Milano and he’s not the only former NBA player heading to Italy to play for the team. Nicolo Melli and Troy Daniels are both close to a deal with the Italian club, as Emiliano Carchia of Sportando passes along.
- Kevin Love’s role on the Cavaliers is expected to shrink next season as some within the organization wonder whether Larry Nance Jr. would be more effective next to Jarrett Allen in the frontcourt and that will likely lead to Love seeing fewer minutes, assuming he remains on the team.
