Over $65 Million Traded (Wagered) On LeBron James’ Next Team on Kalshi

Staff Report by Staff Report

The race to sign LeBron James has become a betting event in its own right.

More than $65 million has been traded on Kalshi’s market for James’s next team, a figure that captures how fixated the basketball world has become on where the four-time MVP lands, and trading volume has spiked since he announced he would leave Los Angeles.

For reference: Kalshi’s market on Monday’s FIFA World Cup Round of 16 heavyweight between Spain and Portugal has drawn roughly $48 million.

Handle (amount wagered/traded) on LeBron James’ next team on Kalshi
  • ESPN’s David Purdum reported on the evening of June 30 that more than $12.8 million had changed hands on Kalshi’s LeBron market in the prior two days, pushing the running total past $17 million, and by the morning of July 1 it had surpassed $23 million.
  • By 9:52 a.m. on July 2, more than $34 million had been traded, Purdum noted, with the Cavaliers passing the Warriors as the favorites.

  • The total topped $50 million by the evening of July 3, per Purdum, before reaching more than $65 million by Monday.

James, who remains under contract with DraftKings via a betting and media sponsorship (an arrangement the 2023 collective bargaining agreement permits because when it allowed players to garner these types of betting contracts for non-NBA events), is now the subject of a prediction market that has drawn more than $65 million, even as the man at its center stays silent on where he will sign.

So Where Is LeBron James Going To Go?

On the morning of July 3, James’ agent, Rich Paul, released a whiteboard of potential destinations for James via his podcast, analyzing a wide cast of suitors as the Cavaliers were fresh as the favorites.

Many rumors about the various teams involved have surfaced since the podcast, though multiple established NBA writers signaled that behind the scenes, Cleveland is viewed as the most likely outcome for James.

Kalshi’s full board, which the exchange posted on Sunday, July 5 as the Cleveland odds spiked slightly, showed the whole field with about $60.3 million in volume at the time.

On Monday July 6, the market had the Cleveland Cavaliers as the clear favorite at 57 percent and remained there as the handle crossed the $65 million mark on Monday afternoon, though the non-Cavaliers teams on the board had shifted again.

Heat Surge Follows Giannis Comments On LeBron

Miami’s doubling from 8 to 16 percent is the largest move on the board on Monday July 6, pulling the Heat even with Golden State for second. The jump followed a clip that circulated Monday of Giannis Antetokounmpo, Miami’s newly acquired star, telling streamer Neon during a live stream that James is the player he most likes to watch. When Neon pointed out that James is a free agent right now, Antetokounmpo let out a knowing “ayyyy,” and the exchange spread quickly among Heat fans.

The swings have made it one of Kalshi’s most volatile markets of the offseason.

In the hours after James told the Lakers he would move on, the Warriors spiked into the 60s and 70s on speculation about a superteam alongside Stephen Curry, before Golden State and Cleveland traded the lead repeatedly and the Cavaliers eventually pulled away.

There remains a growing belief around the NBA that James will return to the Cavaliers, though depending on your source, multiple teams remain in the mix.

The Cavaliers drafted James first overall in 2003 and he delivered the franchise its only championship in 2016, so a third stint would close the loop on a career that started in Northeast Ohio. For a player who turns 42 during the season, the market has framed the choice less as a title chase than as a referendum on how he wants his career remembered.

It’s worth noting that Kalshi identifies as a federally regulated event-contracts exchange rather than a sportsbook, so participants are buying and selling contracts that pay out based on the first NBA team James signs with for 2026-27, a market set to resolve by late October. Prices move in real time as reports break, which is why a single rumor can send a team soaring or sinking, and no decision has been made yet, with agent Rich Paul telling Mark Medina that a decision may not come “anytime soon”.

For now, at least, the money is on the homecoming.
