The Miami Heat kicked off the new school year in classic Heat Culture fashion today. They hosted their annual Back-to-School Shopping Spree, presented by Morgan & Morgan, at the Walmart Supercenter on West Flagler Street in the Fontainebleau area of Miami.
Heat guards Davion Mitchell and Tre Donaldson came through to do some back-to-school shopping with the youth. In addition, the Heat’s mascot, Burnie, joined some students from the Advocacy Network on Disabilities for an afternoon of shopping and connection. Each student received an iPad, backpacks, and a $500 gift card to stock up on notebooks, writing utensils, clothing, and other school essentials.
The Advocacy Network on Disabilities works to champion people with intellectual, developmental, and other disabilities by advancing inclusion, services, and systemic change. Seeing the kids light up while navigating the aisles with Mitchell and Donaldson captured the spirit of the event perfectly.
Mitchell and Donaldson were on-site at Walmart interacting with the students, pushing carts, helping pick out items, and creating those genuine moments that go beyond the court and the game of Basketball. Burnie added his usual entertainment as well.

Donaldson, the Heat rookie who played his college ball locally at the University of Miami, spoke with media beforehand about the opportunity to give back in his new city. Mitchell followed up later, emphasizing the importance of the organization showing up for the community.

Events like this continue to show why the Miami Heat stand out as an organization. Heat Culture remains about more than basketball. It’s about showing up, investing in the next generation, and making sure kids head into the school year with the tools and support they need.
