LeBron James Likely To Pick Cavaliers After Weekend of Speculation

Staff Report by Staff Report

The buzz around LeBron James’s free agency has swung toward a homecoming.

There is a growing belief around the NBA that James will return to the Cleveland Cavaliers, the team that drafted him, to close out his career, though no decision has been made and multiple teams remain in the mix, according to Marc Stein and Jake Fischer of The Stein Line.

On Friday before July 4th weekend, James’ agent, Rich Paul, showcased a whiteboard on his podcast, outlining potential options, which includes the Cavs, Heat, Sixers, Nuggets and Wolves.

Stein and Fischer describe Cleveland as the scenario to beat over the weekend, writing that more executives around the league now view a return to Northeast Ohio as the likeliest outcome. James has been spotted in the area several times over the past week, which has fueled the speculation, even if he routinely returns to his native Akron in the offseason. The pull is obvious, as Cleveland drafted him first overall in 2003 and he delivered the franchise its lone championship in 2016, ending a 52-year title drought for the city, so a third stint would offer a storybook ending.

Part of what has driven the chatter is how quiet the Cavaliers have been, as they were expected to have a new deal done with James Harden and to chase free-agent forward Jonathan Kuminga, but their only move so far has been re-signing reserve center Thomas Bryant to a minimum contract, according to Stein and Fischer. That inactivity has led to speculation that Cleveland is deliberately preserving roster flexibility.

The behind-the-scenes chatter lines up with that belief with Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson reporting that the buzz behind the scenes still points back to Cleveland. Robinson adds that people he spoke with in and around the organization are open to a reunion.

Sources within the organization have shared that they’d be open to James returning to Ohio for a historic third stint, a sentiment I’ve closely tracked across local channels like Big Play Cleveland. Out of those that I’ve polled in and around the franchise, only one lone voice was anti-LeBron return.

The Cavaliers could be keeping a roster spot open to trade for Bronny James from the Lakers if his father signs, allowing the two to remain teammates, according to Stein and Fischer. ESPN’s Dave McMenamin has reported the Lakers could move Bronny once LeBron decides.

Several suitors still believe they are in it, including the Warriors, long considered early favorites, who can pair James with Stephen Curry; the Heat, with new star Giannis Antetokounmpo and Team USA teammate Bam Adebayo; the Timberwolves around Anthony Edwards; the Nuggets alongside Nikola Jokić; and the 76ers, with Joel Embiid and a newly acquired Jaylen Brown. Agent Rich Paul has floated all of those as primary landing spots.

As Stein and Fischer caution, momentum and a final decision have not always lined up with James, who has yet to announce anything after telling the Lakers he would play elsewhere. Still, after a weekend of speculation, the idea of finishing where it began has Cleveland looking like the team to beat.
