Parcing LeBron James Free Agency Rumors: Sixers, Embiid, Risk Management, Cavs, Trades

Staff Report by Staff Report
July 13, 2026
Reading Time: 7 mins read
A A

The world continues to wait for LeBron James to announce his decision for where he’s going to play during the 2026-27 and possibly beyond.

There have been rumors about team pitches, voice memos and which players he wants to play with. Parcing through what is news and what is noise is almost a sport itself.

Most everyone is publicly claiming that no one knows what James is going to decide. That could be true. Another possible theory, per a source familiar with financial markets, has to do with legal compliance around prediction markets and reporting.

The lack of leaks could partially be due to the result of LeBron’s next team betting/trading event on prediction markets, which are approaching $100 million on the amount wagered on some platforms. The fact that prediction markets are subjected to insider trading rules, thus requiring some compliance standards (James, himself has a deal with DraftKings; a company that briefly took down their odds over the weekend but are now back up), is certainly something that should be considered behind the scenes.

For example, if the voice memos reports are true, one explanation would be that it’s a prudent risk mitigation strategy compared to taking traditional meetings: one way communication with James also is a legal defense for the people involved in talks to be able to claim they do not to have any inside information (it’s worth noting that this is educated speculation and not legal advice in any capacity).

  • Other possible explanations for the voice memos include that they will be used in a future documentary about James’ last decision; that James has already made a predetermined decision and isn’t going to waste time or impact the reputations of others on a traditional recruiting process; or that it’s just a new entertaining way to manufacture fan engagement along with executives coming on Rich Paul’s podcast to give a serious pitch to James.

If you’ve been following James’ path and his three previous planned free agent pivots, it’s easier to see what reporting has legs and which are just good PR and media strategy. Let’s breakdown the latest:

Sixers’ Chances (Or Lack Thereof)

  • The Sixers continue to be linked to James by multiple outlets but we have reasons to believe the Sixers-James connection isn’t a serious path. We believe James’ camp sees the Philadelphia market as appealing and fruitful from an engagement standpoint. Given past events, that’s all we’d give credence to despite the city being named on Rich Paul’s whiteboard.
  • In 2018, despite many in the basketball world knowing that LeBron was going to head to the Lakers, the Sixers were continuously reported as a possibility. There were even rumors that James looked at local prep schools for his kids.
  • Members of Sixers ownership reportedly traveled to Los Angeles to make a pitch leading up James’ decision, though James didn’t attend the meeting; instead having his reps take it.
    • Sources told FortyEightMinutes that leading up to LeBron’s decision, the Philadelphia Police were told that there was a chance for James to pick the Sixers when free agency opened and as with most anticipated celebrations in the city, that prompted the department to deploy overtime funds to take measures for crowd control, including greasing of the poles, as the city did for the Eagles’ past NFC Championship and Super Bowl games where a celebration is possible.
  • There are no such plans for crowd risk management efforts in Philadelphia at this time, sources tell FortyEightMinutes.
    • It’s not clear whether that is a result there not being a more publicly anticipated time for James’ decision (like the eve/night of free agency or a planned TV appearance, such as Decision special in 2010) or simply, there isn’t real belief that James will be announcing his decision to play for the Sixers this time around.
  • James has “deep concerns” about playing with Joel Embiid, according to Brandon ‘Scoop B’ Robinson:
    • “Whispers out of Philly indicate that if the 76ers want to secure LeBron, the pairing with Embiid is a non-starter; the preference would be to avoid playing them together entirely.
    • “James harbors deep concerns regarding Embiid’s long-term health and declining mobility for an arduous championship run.”
  • Robinson also recounts that Embiid has been publicly vocal with his trolling of James:
    • “Embiid has never been one to hold back his tongue, previously raising eyebrows early in his career when he publicly trolled LeBron on social media during past free-agency periods.”
  • Anyone who has spent time in NBA media over the past 20 years knows that James’ team does meticulous social media monitoring, having a reputation on par with the top agencies for brand management, not only among sports but also among other industries.
  • We previously reported that the new Sixers regime has already gone over scenarios on an elongated post-Embiid transition, including trade scenarios.
    • That kind of scenario analysis is common for front offices and doesn’t indicate a move is coming any time soon.
  • The Sixers will go into next season with Embiid as part of their new core-four but it’s likely that an Embiid exit will come at some point in the future.
  • For now, it looks like Embiid is being listed as a reason why James won’t be signing in Philadelphia, despite the Sixers never being the favorite to sign him and the possibility existing that James has already made a decision leading into free agency regardless of what the Sixers did or didn’t do with an Embiid trade.
  • It’s also almost certain that whenever Embiid’ exit from Philadelphia comes , it will be accompanied by media reports painting Embiid as the problem and scapegoat for whatever level of failed success the franchise has.

Warriors Out Of Picture?

“I don’t think there’s a decision that’s been made but say if there was, it’ll make you think twice about it,” – Draymond Green on his pitch to LeBron James in free agency 🧐🧐🧐 pic.twitter.com/ksDdf81IBG

— ESPN Cleveland (@ESPNCleveland) July 12, 2026

James reportedly golfed with Draymond Green late last week and Green had some awkwardly phrased comments on his latest podcast. Green become the latest person with a media platform to come out and explicitly say that they don’t think a decision has been made.

Brian Windhorst previously went on ESPN earlier in free agency and indicated that the Warriors situation could be a leverage play, being that there are reports that LeBron will only go there if they trade for Anthony Davis. Davis is angling for a max contract extension with the Wizards and the risk of Davis pushing his way to Golden State alongside James is seen by many as a leverage play for a new contract.

It’ll be interesting to see how many Warriors fans will have disdain for the organization for not making that move regardless of how close it was to ever really coming to fruition.

Cavaliers Announcement Coming Soon?

The Cavaliers have remained the favorite on the prediction markets, betting markets and in back channel chatter for nearly the entirety of free agency.

ESPN radio’s Emmett Golden is one of the few media personalities who is claiming hears something substantial: that James will sign with the Cavaliers and it will also include a trade for his son, Bronny James.

🚨🚨🚨The streets are talking and they’re telling @egoldie80 that LeBron and Bronny are coming home 👀👀👀

The Lakers have Bronny under contract, so the Cavs would need to give up some compensation for him.

James’ decision could be announced this week, as the 4-time MVP has upcoming events scheduled, including panels with CNBC and Fanatics Fan Fest.
